Am Institut für Geschichte der Technischen Universität Darmstadt ist zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt eine
Professur (W3) für „Humanities Data Science and Methodology“
zu besetzen.
Die Stelleninhaberin bzw. der Stelleninhaber soll eine Schlüsselrolle bei der Weiterentwicklung der „Digital Humanities“ an der TU Darmstadt an der Schnittstelle zwischen den Fachbereichen 02 (Gesellschafts- und Geschichtswissenschaften) und 20 (Informatik) übernehmen.
Die Professur ist der Erforschung der Datengrundlagen der Humanities gewidmet (textförmige Daten, aber auch Bild-, Objekt-, Geodaten, Meta- und Messdaten oder digital born data). Dies umfasst zum einen die Entwicklung von und die epistemologische Reflexion über Methoden zur Analyse dieser Daten, inklusive der Reflexion über die Entstehungs- und Nutzungsbedingungen der Daten. Zum anderen gehören die Entwicklung und die Anwendung algorithmischer Methoden zum Profil der Professur.
Eines oder mehrere der folgenden Forschungsgebiete bzw. -verfahren sollen im Fokus stehen: Informations-/Wissensmodellierung, Digitale Daten-/Quellenkritik, Research Software Engineering (z.B. Behaviour Driven Development), Visualisierung von Daten der Humanities/Visual Computing (z.B. GIS, Schnittstellen), Modellierung von Forschungsstrategien in den IT-basierten Humanities, inkl. multimodaler Korpora (z.B. Data Scopes), Qualitätsmanagement von Humanities-Forschungssoftware, Forschungsdaten und Forschungsinfrastrukturen; ferner auch Natural Language Processing, Texttechnologie, Korpus- und Computerlinguistik.
Zu den Aufgaben der Professur gehören zwei miteinander verbundene Bereiche: Zum einen die Fähigkeit zur Entwicklung und Anwendung algorithmischer Methoden, zum anderen die kritische Reflexion über die Voraussetzungen und Folgen der Produktion und Nutzung digitaler Daten in den Humanities. Beides soll beitragen zur Theorie- und Methodenbildung digitaler Wissenschaftspraxis. Dies setzt Vertrautheit sowohl mit algorithmischen Verfahren als auch mit den Verfahrensweisen geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlicher Interpretation voraus, inkl. hermeneutischer Ansätze.
In der Lehre widmet sich die Professur Verfahren, wie digitale Quellen mit digitalen Methoden unter verschiedenen fachlichen Perspektiven ausgewertet werden (z.B. politische Reden, Twitter-Nachrichten, Bildquellen u.a.). Konkret umfasst dies zentrale Anteile im institutsübergreifenden Master ‚Data and Discourse Studies‘. Darüber hinaus sollen Beiträge in den unterschiedlichen Studiengängen des FB 02 geleistet werden.
Die Bereitschaft zur Zusammenarbeit mit allen im Fachbereich vertretenen Fächern sowie mit dem Fachbereich Informatik im Bereich Digital Humanities wird vorausgesetzt. Eine Zweitmitgliedschaft im Fachbereich Informatik wird angestrebt. Institutionell wird die Professur im Institut für Geschichte im FB 02 angesiedelt. Daher sind Befähigung und Bereitschaft zur konstruktiven Mitarbeit im Institut für Geschichte sowie seiner Weiterentwicklung in Forschung und Lehre erforderlich.
Einstellungsvoraussetzungen: Die Stelleninhaberin bzw. der Stelleninhaber verfügt über eine wissenschaftliche Ausbildung in den Humanities (in einem der am Fachbereich 02 vertretenen Fächer oder Bibliothekswissenschaft). Außerdem verfügt sie/er über ausgewiesene Expertise in den oben genannten Gebieten, insbesondere in der Entwicklung und Anwendung algorithmisch basierter digitaler Analysemethoden. Außer einer herausragenden Promotion und zusätzlichen wissenschaftlichen Leistungen (Habilitation oder äquivalenten Leistungen) sollen Bewerberinnen und Bewerber innovative Beiträge zur Forschung und Lehre im Schwerpunkt der Professur vorweisen.
Die Einstellung erfolgt im Beamtenverhältnis oder in einem außertariflichen Angestelltenverhältnis mit einer qualifikationsabhängigen Besoldung/Vergütung entsprechend der W-Besoldung. Diese wird zwischen Bewerberin oder Bewerber und Hochschulleitung verhandelt. Es gelten ferner die Einstellungsvoraussetzungen der §§ 61 und 62 Hessisches Hochschulgesetz.

The Institute of History at Technische Universität Darmstadt seeks to appoint a
Professor (W3) for Humanities Data Science and Methodology
The post holder is going to play a key role in the ongoing development of the „Digital Humanities“ at TU Darmstadt at the interface between the Department 02 – Social and Historical Sciences and Department 20 – Computer Science.
The focus of the professorship is on research on the data foundation of the humanities (textual data, but also image, object-, geodata, meta- and measurement data or born digital data). This entails, on the one hand, the development and epistemological reflection of methods for the analysis of these data types, including reflection on the origins of the data and their use. On the other hand, the profile of the professorship entails the development and application of algorithmic methods for the humanities.
One or more of the following research areas should be the expertise of the prospective post holder: information/knowledge modelling, digital data/source criticism, research software engineering (e.g. Behaviour Driven Development), visualisation of humanities data, visual computing (e.g. GIS, interfaces), modelling of research strategies in IT-based humanities including multimodal corpora (e.g. Data Scopes), quality management of humanities research software, research data and research infrastructures; also natural language processing, text technology, corpus and computational linguistics.
Required skills thus extend over two related areas: expertise in the development and application of algorithmic methods and critical reflection on the prerequisites and consequences of the production and use of digital data in the humanities. Both areas should contribute to the development of theory and methods for digital scientific practice. This requires familiarity both with algorithmic procedures and with the procedures of interpretation in the humanities and social sciences, including hermeneutical approaches.
In teaching, the post holder should cover procedures for evaluating digital sources with digital methods from different professional perspectives (e.g. analyses of political speeches, Twitter news, image sources, etc.). In concrete terms, this includes central parts of the inter-institutional master’s programme ‚Data and Discourse Studies‘. In addition, contributions are to be made to the various courses of the Department of Social and Historical Sciences.
Willingness to cooperate with all subjects represented in the Department of Social and Historical Sciences as well as with the Department of Computer Science in the field of Digital Humanities is expected. A co-membership („Zweitmitgliedschaft“) in the Department of Computer Science is planned. Institutionally, the professorship will be located in the Institute of History in Department 02. Therefore, the ability and willingness to work constructively in the Institute of History and its further development in research and teaching are required.
Recruitment requirements: The holder of the position has a scientific education in the Humanities (in one of the subjects represented at Faculty 02 or in library science). In addition, she/he has proven skills and experience in the above mentioned areas, in particular in the development and application of algorithmically based digital analysis methods. An outstanding doctoral degree and additional scientific qualifications (Habilitation or equivalent) are required; applicants should provide proof of innovative contributions to research and teaching in the main focus area of the professorship.
The position is tenured with a remuneration package commensurate with experience and qualifications, following the German „W-Besoldung“ and subject to negotiations between the applicant and the university directorate. The regulations for employment are specified under §§ 61 and 62 HHG (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz).
